Amanda….your family is truly inspirational. My heart goes out to you as a mother cause worrying about people you love the most is the worst type of worry. Thanks for the update and all the pics with smiles. They warm every mother’s heart! Swallow studies are the easiest tests that ever existed! They give cookies (really!) and various liquids and essentially watch – via x-ray of sorts – how things are chewed and how the muscles work as he swallows. They make sure everything is going down the proper tube and the muscles are contracting appropriately. In is non-invasive. There are no proves or chemicals. It will be one of the easiest tests he’s ever had.
Oh my goodness! I think I just re lived the last 3 months!!! WOW.
These images are just amazing, emotionally connected and telling. Chance is such an inspiring little boy. He is so lucky to have parents and siblings like all of you guys are. It sounds like both of our kids have gotten denied by Cigna… My April, who’s a month younger than Chance but with same lesion level, isn’t strong enough yet even for a walker. We ordered a dynamic stander for her back in November, to help build her core strength, teach her proper standing position, and give her the mobility that she craves. It’s about a $2,000 piece of equipment, but with it, we may be able to avoid the series of orthopedic surgeries that she is potentially facing, which will cost Cigna WAY more than $2,000. And even at $2,000, it’s much cheaper than the wheelchair which would be the next step if she cannot get the mobility that a dynamic stander would provide.
Last week (nearly 2 months after ordering), Cigna denied the application. And we cannot even appeal it, because the reason for the denial is “your policy doesn’t cover standers.” Period. End of story. Even though my union’s contract says that our benefits must cover 100% of durable medical equipment. Unlimited amount. Of course, it’s taken hours of phone calls even to get the reason out of them…
Oh, and when calling Cigna, as early as you can, start saying “Customer Service.” You get to a human faster that way (under 5 minutes each time)…

Wow, this is absolutely beautiful. You have captured the essence of how small a part of a life Spina Bifida is as represented by the small(ish) scar on the babies back, to me anyway. This mark, to me represents that Spina Bifida is not this huge all encompassing diagnosis of gloom and doom the medical profession try to make it out to be. All these pictures are so beautiful. I am a Mamaw to an amazing 3 month old boy with spina bifida, he is my first grandchild and my first born daughters first child. I am not his guardian but my daughters husband works nights and sleep during the day so my daughter and I have been the ones tag teaming it in taking care of her son and trying to research all we can on Spina bifida. Since I am just the “grandma” many talkingforum groups out there refuse admittance to me, so finding someone else who wil talk with me about his birth defect is next to impossible.
